Jeff McLaughlin, the founder of McLaughlin Services, started his career as the maintenance manager at a family owned heat treat shop (ATTI in Kendallville, IN). After years of hands-on experience operating & repairing equipment, he eventually realized he could build better equipment than anything currently on the market. Equipment that was not only better performing, but built to last and easy to maintain. Today, McLaughlin Furnace Group manufactures world-class furnaces. Their engineering staff is capable of designing custom engineered equipment designed specifically for the customer’s process and product. McLaughlin Furnace Group manufactures a wide variety of furnaces, including temper furnaces, car bottom furnaces, belt furnaces, etc. They also manufacture ancillary equipment such as endothermic gas generators, load cars, load tables, cooling tables, and ladle preheaters. No project is too big or too small. All are built to exacting standards, or the McLaughlin name won’t be on them.
Rebuilt Furnaces – Better than New
McLaughlin Furnace Group rebuilds all types of furnaces, and is the largest rebuilder of furnaces in the nation. Most furnaces are rebuilt at McLaughlin’s state-of-art manufacturing facility in Avilla, IN. The furnaces are stripped down to the shell, and then sandblasted down to the bare metal. Warped metal is straightened or replaced, and cracks are repaired & reinforced. The lining is re-bricked including proprietary hearth and door lintel designs. The combustion system is upgraded with fuel efficient burners and state-of-art controls. Door and elevator mechanicals are upgraded with rugged, yet easy to maintain systems. With years of experience, McLaughlin knows the weaknesses and typical failure modes of most furnaces. When rebuilding the furnace, many items are reinforced for longer life. Many components are upgraded to modern, more robust designs. When complete, the rebuilt furnace is better than when it was first built.

Our Goal was to produce the best endothermic gas generator in the world. We started from the ground up with our proprietary retort—designed for long life, and engineered to produce consistently high-quality gas.
We then engineered our heating system – designed for uniform heat transfer to the retort. Our generator utilizes self-recuperative burners for improved fuel efficiency. The heating system consumes less than half the energy compared to the atmospheric burner design of the competition. The system is easy to commission, and low maintenance.
Our hinged shell design folds open to provide easy access to the retort for servicing or replacement. The shell is insulated with advanced refractory material to provide low skin temperatures.
We set new industry standards with our revolutionary Tru-Mix™ Mixing System. Our patent-pending mixing system was designed to produce accurate mixing, which produces consistently high-quality endogas under a wide range of demands. It precisely controls the air/gas ratio based on dewpoint. The system is fast responding in the event of large swings in flow (as furnaces go online or offline). The carbon level recovers in minutes, not hours. It accurately adapts to minor changes in the environment to produce true tracking of the setpoint. McLaughlin Furnace Group offers temper furnaces with a variety of design options. We offer both electric and gas-fired heating systems. Single door or double door models are available. We offer skid hearth or roller hearth models. We also offer optional stainless lined interiors for the most demanding applications.
Our gas-fired furnaces utilize a proprietary dual-blower burner system. The system operates at optimum fuel efficiency at the higher temperature range. At lower temperatures, the secondary blower introduces additional air for better temperature uniformity. The standard uniformity is less than ± 10°F across an operating range of 300 to 1,400°F, We also offer tighter uniformity based on the application. This tight uniformity results in better product quality for the customer. Furthermore, the control system allows a controlled-ramp cool down of the load for faster turnaround time.

Car bottom furnaces need to be able to withstand massive amounts of weight while also providing uniform heating, both around and under the load. We custom design our car bottom furnaces to meet the exacting needs of our customers. We start from the ground up. We assist our customers with the rail and floor design. Our cars are designed to withstand the heaviest of loads. Our support piers are engineered to provide stable loading and uniform heating around (and under) the load.
Our furnaces utilize pulse-fired combustion systems for optimum fuel efficiency. Combined with velocity style burners, the pulse-fired system also produces optimum temperature uniformity. This uniformity is usually less than ± 10°F across an operating range of 250 to 2,100°F, even on the largest of furnaces. This tight uniformity results in better product quality for the customer. We then take it a step further. Our proprietary control system allows the user to profile the combustion of each individual burner. This prevents flame impingement and/or hot spots on odd shaped loads.

McLaughlin Furnace Group Discinerator
Our patent pending Discinerator uses excess hydrogen gas to maintain combustion in the incineration chamber, while in incineration and dissociation mode which produces superior results and a highly efficient process.
One independent system combining Ammonia dissociator and exhaust gas incinerator.
Allows the flow of ammonia through the dissociator to supply dissociated ammonia (DA) to one or more furnaces.
Exhaust gases from a nitriding or FNC furnace can then be heated with oxygen outside the discinerator retort for combustion to provide dissociated ammonia through the unit’s retort.
Used to dissociate ammonia for nitriding and FNC processes and to control air pollution within a plant.

We can sandblast old furnaces down to the shell and rebuild them from the ground-up, making them even stronger than what they were when they were originally built. We straighten warped metal, repair and reinforce old cracks, and re-brick and re-line the lining with our hearth, door lintel, and many other insulation package designs.

McLaughlin Furnace Group rebuilds all types of pumps no matter the manufacturer. Most pumps are rebuilt at McLaughlin’s state-of-art manufacturing facility in East Windsor, CT. The pumps are cleaned and sealed. Broken components are fixed or replaced, and cracks are repaired & reinforced. The lining is tested for leaks and quality seal. With years of experience, McLaughlin knows the weaknesses and typical failure modes of vacuum pumps. When rebuilding the pump, many items are reinforced for longer life. Many components are upgraded to modern, more robust designs. When complete, the rebuilt pump is better than when it was first built.
